Pizza is on the Menu!

My youngest son's birthday is coming up in another week and he wants to have a Halo party with his friends. Also he would like pizza and ice cream to be served at the party. A few months ago, this would have been impossible as those two items would have sent him to the bathroom in a hurry with stomach cramps and the big D.

Last week, I bought a large Hawaiian pizza from Costco and had that for dinner. Andy ate about 1/2 the pizza himself and nothing. No D, no gas, no cramps. It was amazing. Not to say that he never has moments where his stomach is not feeling well. He's still not 100% normal but he is pretty darn close to it.

I feel like it's a miracle. I went ahead and served up chicken enchiladas with low fat sour cream sauce and again Andy had no problems with it. I decided to take him off the digestive enzymes but he is still on calcium caltrate and Digestive Advantage IBS for maintenance. These two products have helped him out tremendously and I ,myself, have decided to go on probiotics because I have seen how much they have helped my son.

I am just elated that he is doing so well. It's going to be a great birthday party!

That is absolutely fantastic news!!! Whatever he has been suffering from may have run it's course for the most part (saying a little prayer) and you did everything right to help his GI tract heal itself. Or something. :) That really is wonderful, a kid should get to be a kid. GI stuff is for old people like me with chin hairs.
I'm very happy for Andy and for you!

Hi there. I've just stumbled across your blog. So children do get IBS. I'm sure my two younger boys suffer with it. Sometimes it's worse than others. I think when they feel really stressed with school, the cramps become a lot worse. I asked my GP about it and she said that children don't get IBS! I've put my middle son onto Soya Milk and it seems to have eased the morning stomach aches. My youngest son has a permanently bloated tummy.

Catherine,

Yes, children certainly can have IBS! Diet changes have really helped my son although now it looks like he is coming out of the flare-up and can eat some regular foods. But during his flare-up he couldn't have dairy and when I took out gluten for a short time that seemed to help too. Eating for IBS by Heather Van Vorous is a good recipe book to have . She has a website too, http://www.helpforibs.com. Also http://ibsgroup.org is another great informative site.
I didn't get very much help from my doctors either. Good luck and I hope your sons' conditions improve.

Thanks so much for your helpful advice! I'm going to try to get a copy of the book you recommend and see if that helps them both.

I've just taken a look at your watercolours and they are really lovely. I think the painting of the grapevine is stunning!!

Thanks Catherine,

I appreciate the compliment and I hope those sites will help. The Digestive Advantage also has been helpful and if your kids have trouble with chronic diarrhea, the calcium caltrate works wonders.
